Can you paint bathtubs

If I could have known that a complete bathroom renovation would be feasible for us fours years into the future, I might have just held tight, and not invested anything into the space until I could afford what I truly wanted. But without a crystal ball, I was just trying to make the best of what little resources I had at the time. And with a ten-year warranty provided to us by the resurfacing company, we felt a little more at ease about our decision.

Other than the one trouble spot pictured above, we have not had any issues with our refinished tub. While I am not exactly sure how or when these rings appeared, I am wondering if soap and shampoo which looks to have leaked out of the bottles ate away at the painted finish over time. Staying away from abrasive cleaners and brushes, I typically only use a rag and a little bit of naturally-derived dish soap.

In summary, I do believe that professional tub refinishing is a great solution if you are trying to avoid demo or plumbing costs. But… would I do something like this in my forever- home?

Given the company only stands behind their product for ten years, probably not. Nonetheless, bathtub resurfacing has proven to be a helpful, short-term solution- lasting us over half of a decade now. For the DIY-ers: Should you attempt painting a tub yourself? With all of the prep-work I watched the contractors do not to mention my past experience using epoxy paint , I stand behind my decision of hiring this particular project out.

It is doable, but you need to possess a butt load of patience which I do not have! Here is a helpful DIY tutorial for painting a bathtub. You do have to sand before you paint anyway, so I would definitely sand those areas. This weekend i am going to do this project because lets be honest an old yellow bath tub is not eye candy to say the least. Did you buy and electric sander or did you just sand it by hand?

Also how long did it take for this project? It is peeling up all over and i was wondering if i just sanded down the tub can i apply right over again?? Would love your thoughts. You know, I would definitely try it! We have done a few coats on different things, it just depends, but I would sand and then maybe get two kits and use them both on it. Do you have to repaint the entire tub?

I have just a few areas where the tub is worn through but the rest of the tub is still nice. Could I just sand those areas and paint them only, without painting the entire tub??

Or would the newly painted areas look too different from the original area of the tub? White is the only color? Also your talking about the bathtub refinishing kit only right? Few years ago I used a kit Like that but it was 2 spray cans ….. I have only found it in white. It is so amazing! We have used it on a few flip projects now. How did this refinish hold up? Anybody have long term experience with this? How great is that! Our tub is brown This would be fabulous. I have two kiddos… how does it hold up?

I would google different ways to get that sticky stuff up. I would do whatever it takes to get the stuff up and then you can paint over what is left with the tub paint.

I am sorry I am not more help. Check YouTube too. We find so much help there! I really wish I would have done the roll on coverage. Worked so much better and would have been cheaper. This is good to know. Thank you for sharing!!! It does come in 3 colors; white, almond, and biscuit.

I have a kit just waiting to get everything i need for my whole bathroom update before i start doing anything that way it gets done and not pushed aside!

Thank you so much!! We also need to do the caulking again, in addition to painting the tub. Would you recommend painting or redoing the caulking first?

Again, thank you fo such clear directions! Looking forward to this project!! Your welcome. Paint first so then you can get a clean and fresh finish with the caulk afterwards. Hey Lindsay, what a wonderful DIY project it was. I will surely paint my bath tub by next week. Special thanks for your step by step guide and obviously those images. Good Job! Thanks for the tips you gave! Yikes… The tub was still in great condition so I decided to also paint it.

I researched the epoxy paints because I had heard that was the only way to go. I however, used Klass Kote Bathtub Epoxy because they were able to make a custom color for me which I wanted. Results were great! It was such fun…really! Thanks for sharing the possibilities to other brave souls.

Thanks for sharing! It works so well that we have done it in other flip houses. We just wanted to white so it made it easy. Have an ugly bathtub or shower surround? What if I told you you can paint your bathtub to make it look fresh, clean, and beautiful?!

When my husband and I lived in our first apartment together, we had a mustard yellow bathtub and surround — and not in a cute, vintage way.

It was so bad, and I cringed a little every time I had to use it! The tub was a marbled off-white that always felt dirty, and the tiles were a different color of off-white that had seen better years. It brightened the entire room up significantly , and now the bathtub actually feels clean when I clean it. This bathroom also saw a lot of other changes — all very affordably. Read to the end of the post for all of the details on how we totally transformed this bathroom using almost nothing but paint!

As long as you follow the directions and take your time, you will end up with a gorgeous result that will fool everyone into thinking your tub has always been bright and shiny. My favorite thing about this project is how absolutely affordable it is to completely change the look of your bathtub. We have a garden tub and I was applying the epoxy to the tile as well , so I ended up using three kits. This project took me about three days to complete. The kit requires that you allow it to dry for a full three days before you shower in it again, so be aware of that before you start this project!

Or, you know, just embrace the stink. Please feel free to use this as a reference, but please do NOT attempt this project without fully reading the instructions that come with the kit!

The directions state that you should clean the tub before removing the caulk, but I knew I was going to make a giant mess removing the caulk anyways, so I decided to tackle that first.

To remove the caulk, I just used a sharp razor blade and ran it along either side of the caulk, then peeled it up. After your first round of cleaning is finished, sand the entire tub and tile area with or grit sandpaper.

The whole point of the sanding it to knock some of the glossiness off the tub and tile and prepare it to accept the epoxy. This step is vital! After sanding, rinse everything off and clean it again. Allow the bathtub to fully dry before painting it I wiped mine down with a towel once I finished cleaning to speed up the drying process. I kept the bathroom door closed while I worked, but of course some of the smell did escape to the rest of the house.

We found that the best way to keep it from bothering us was to open the windows throughout the house and light a few candles. Even better?

The tub and tile refinishing kit comes with a two-part epoxy. The key is that you have to stir the epoxy for a minimum of two full minutes before you try to paint with it! I mean, this is a big project. Greige paint continues to be a highly sought-after shade in both new and newly redesigned homes.
